WordPress SEO Basics That Actually Move the Needle — Sacramento
Most small-business SEO advice is a decade out of date. Here is what we build into every Website Pilot site on day one — sitemap, llms.txt for answer engines, and geo-targeted content — and what the ongoing work actually looks like.
Written for business owners in Sacramento and the surrounding region — Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove, Davis, and the greater Sacramento Valley.
Search has split in two, and most small-business websites are still only built for one half of it.
The first half is the one everybody knows: someone types a phrase into Google, Google returns ten blue links, and you want to be one of them. The second half is newer and moving faster — someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, or Google's AI overview a question, and an answer engine composes a response by reading and citing sources. That second half is called answer engine optimization, or AEO, and it is where most agencies have not caught up.
We build for both. Here is exactly what that means.
The three things we do in the initial build
Every Autopilot Launch — the $600 one-time build — includes these from day one. They are not upsells.
1. A sitemap configured for proper indexing. A sitemap is a machine-readable index of every page on your site. Without one, a crawler discovers your pages by following links and guessing, and pages get missed. With one, you are handing Google a table of contents. We generate it, reference it from your robots file, and make sure it is submitted so indexing is not left to chance.
2. An llms.txt file for answer engine optimization. This is a plain-text file at the root of your site that describes your business, your services, your pricing structure, your service area, and the questions people ask about what you do — in language an AI system can read directly. When someone asks an assistant "who builds websites for small businesses near me," the systems that can read a clear, structured source have something concrete to work from instead of guessing from scraped fragments. We write it as part of the build.
3. Geo-targeted content generated per page. Your pages are not written generically and then sprinkled with your city name. Before we write anything, we pull the keyword landscape for your industry in your area and identify what your actual competitors rank for. That research shapes the page structure, the headings, the body copy, and the tagging. A roofer in Camarillo and a roofer in Thousand Oaks get different pages, because the search behavior around them is different.
What the ongoing work adds
The build sets the foundation. It does not, by itself, produce a steady stream of new content — and content volume is what moves competitive terms over time.
That is the SEO/AEO Growth Plan at $350/month: we target seven researched local keywords for your business, produce fresh content against them every month, build backlinks, extend the geo targeting into new locations, and report what we did. We promise the work and the reporting, never a specific position — nobody controls Google's ranking.
A real result, and the honest caveat
One of our clients is on the base package plus ongoing SEO/AEO work. They currently hold the number one position for thirteen different keywords, and have held that level for over a year. It took roughly six months to build that traction. They recently told us they could not be happier, and have decided to increase their investment to target more keywords and produce more content.
That is one client's outcome in one industry and one market. Results vary with competition, industry, budget, and how long the work runs. We share it because it shows the shape of the timeline — traction in months, not weeks — not because it is a promise.

That is the actual report: a manufactured-home company, 142 backlinks built in a single recent week, and position 1 across thirteen local keyword variations. Again — one client, one industry, one market. Results vary.
The mistake we see most often
Ignoring AEO entirely.
Most SEO providers are still optimizing exclusively for the ten blue links. Meanwhile a growing share of buying research starts inside an assistant, and the sites that can be read and cited cleanly are the ones that show up in those answers. AEO does not work equally well on every platform — it depends on how cleanly your content and structure can be parsed. WordPress is the most capable engine for this, alongside the coded sites we build on our Navigator Launch.
We do not sell AEO as a separate line item. It is combined with our SEO work for simplicity and savings, because in practice the two share the same research and the same content pipeline.
Where to start
If you already have a site, the fastest read on where you stand is a conversation — we will look at your indexing, your structure, and what your competitors in Sacramento are ranking for. If you do not have a site yet, Autopilot Launch includes all three foundations above and launches in 48 hours.

What this looks like in Sacramento
Sacramento rewards businesses that show up properly, because a surprising number of established local competitors still have not. It is common here to find a well-reviewed, decades-old business with no sitemap, no structured data, and a site that was last touched in 2016. That gap is an opening.
The regional shape matters too. Sacramento is a hub surrounded by fast-growing suburbs — Roseville, Folsom, Elk Grove, Rocklin, Davis — and people in those cities search by their own city name, not by "Sacramento." A single page that says "Sacramento area" captures far less than a set of pages built for the cities you actually drive to.
We also see strong results here from review velocity, because in a market this size a steady flow of recent reviews stands out quickly.
We work with businesses across the greater Sacramento region and nationwide.

Autopilot Launch is $600 one-time — a multi-page WordPress site with competitor keyword research built into every page, a sitemap for proper indexing, and an llms.txt file so AI search tools can read and cite your business.
